Dear students,
As I mentioned in class, today's topic will be plagiarism. Please think about the following questions:
1. In your culture, how do you include the words and ideas of others in papers you write for school?
2. Why do you think some students plagiarize?
3. Is plagiarism a problem in your native country?
4. Plagiarism has become a big problem in the U.S. Why do you think this is so?
Write a short cross-cultural comparison in paragraph form, using the above questions as a guide. Remember to react to your classmates' statements also.

ReplyDeleteActually In our culture should anyone who writes any word or ideas to mention the source of this information. That's what I learned in school and what I learned from my father. Some student’s problem takes some information from an earlier article or from the Internet, and they did not mention where you found this information but they ascribes to them self. Plagiarism is one of biggest problem that faced by most countries, both in my country as any other place in the world. Especially at the university it may be deprived of the study. I think a lot of students want to rely on others in order to write an article or report on anything for the university. I know that there are websites you write articles amount of money and most of the university students are using these websites. Maybe this is one of the main reasons why students plagiarizing.
Yes, I know many people give money to other students,and students write for them.
DeleteIn our culture, I write what I want to say, but we can use some good words or sentences form internet or books. When we use words or ideas from others, we need write about where are they from. I think some students don't want to think their work and lazy, so they plagiarizing. Plagiarizing is a problem in my country, but it also is a problem in the world. Plagiarism has become a big problem in the U.S. ,I think people want get a good grade, as the same reason of students. They don't want to think, they think they can't do it well.So they plagiarizing, maybe they think plagiarizing is easy and convenience.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree with you. Many students think it is easy to copy something from others, so they don't need to think. It causes up to 8,000 Chinese students were kicked out form the schools in the U.S by 2015. We should take serious on this problem too.
DeleteIn my culture, we also have to cite where the sources from like we did in the U.S. I think some students plagiarize because they don't want to think how to write. Copy from other people is the easy and fast way to finish the work. Plagiarism also is a big problem in China, but it may not so serious like in the US. Plagiarism become a big problem in the U.S. because people think if you plagiarize on your paper, it means you are not a honest person. People won't believe you will be honest in work. plagiarism still will happen on you in work. For them, a honest office member is the most important thing. I think that why plagiarism became a big problem.

DeleteIn China, many students copy the words and ideas from the internet, books or other sources. It is a very serious problem in China. As the technology grows up very quickly, finding information on the internet becomes very easy and common. Also, there isn’t any punishments for Chinese students if they stole some ideas from the original writers except in the university. But, unlike the United States, students might be kick out form the universities if they plagiarise; Chinese students only will not get any grades if they plagiarise. And we don’t have any lessons about cite sources in our papers form schools until we go to college. However, plagiarism is not only a serious issue in schools, but also is a serious issue in society. For example, there was a very popular Tv show in China. But, they found out it was stolen the ideas from Korea recently. So the show has been canceled. In the United States, plagiarism has become a big problem, too. But people take serious on this problem in the U.S. And there are many legal provisions to restrict of plagiarism. That is much better than China.
ReplyDeleteIn China, many students cite the famous sentences and good sources form other articles and books.In China, we usually don't write where are the they from in the regular articles. We just write them on the academic and professional thesis. I think some students plagiarize because they don't want to thinking and want to finish the assignments quickly. Yes, plagiarize is a big problem in China. I heard about some college students cannot get the graduation certificate because of coping graduation thesis. Now, China has a system and it could find which article are copies. If the repetitive rate high than 20%, the student should rewrite the article. Plagiarize becomes a big problem in the U.S.A. I think the reason is that students want to get a good score but don't want to spend time to study. At the same time, the website has many good sources and they are convenience and easy to copy them. I think this is a reason why students plagiarize.

DeleteIn Kazakhstan we use the rules of the plagiarism starting from the middle school. Our school program requires making reports about different topics, where we must include the original sources of the information we use in these reports. Question of using the citation especially actual when you are studying in univeristy, in our country. For example, my almamater uses special programs, which let professors to dowload the papers of the students and detect the plagiarism, not only the copied sentences from free sources, but also copying between students.
ReplyDeleteThe problem of plagiarism among students is very common, because, in my opinion, some students do not have enough information about these unappropriate behavior. Another reason of such behavior is lazyness; students often consider writing big papers as something very difficult and as the result they just "copy-paste" the original sentences. However, the fault of the assignment is also occurs, exactly when professors assign to write too much pages of the particular topic. In other words, teaching stuff must understand the average amount of papers that students can handle and write their own words.
In my opinion, the question of the plagiarism has become actual in US, because young generation need to be explained about these problem. They must be aware that there is nothing shaming in using others opinion or reasearch results, but it must be written in right way.

ReplyDeletein university，you must cite where they come from. From my piont of view，the reasons why students plagiarize are either lazyness or dont know how to finish the paper. Plagiarsm has become a really serious issue in China. some students even got canclled their degree because of plagiarism. With more and more oversea students coming to study in the US，plagiarism has also become a big problem. Most of students are too young and unqulified to study abord. They rather spend most of time on having fun than studying. Some of them pay money to others to get paper done， others just simply dont konw how to do it，so them plagiarize from internet or other students.
